About six weeks ago, Pat and I decided to buy a race car to race in the Baja 1000, the most challenging off-road race in the world. We found the car at a garage sale in Colorado Springs. It seemed like it was ready to go. It was tricked out with a full roll cage, a beefed up 2275cc motor, and racing everything, so we thought. We tested it and tested it. It ran strong, handled well and would land from a jump very smoothly.  We read many stories about the Baja 1000 on the internet and watched the movie "Dust To Glory". We thought we were ready.
One day we heard a thump, thump, thump coming from the rear of the car. We found out there was a loose axel so we started ordering better parts. You can't just order the parts you need to replace now, you have to plan ahead and order parts you think might go bad in the race. One thing lead to another and the dollars started adding up and adding and adding up some more. One day we decided it would be a good idea to get the rule book for the Baja 1000 race. We sent off our payment for the book and about a week later the book showed up. The next day we started reading it. At this point, we realized we were in trouble. The race is less than two months away and our car is no where near ready.
At the moment, the car is sitting in the garage out back, the engine is sitting in Bob's garage (he's the local bug expert), and parts of the cage are on the floor at The Shop (the local 4x4 and fabricating shop). There is so much more to do to this car to get it ready, not to mention towing it to California to have it inspected by a SCORE official next week. Everybody is doing their best to get this car in the race.
It is official now. We are registered to race. We have paid our dues and will be starting the race in Ensanada, Baja Mexico on the 13th of  November.
Want to see what the course looks like? Here's a .pdf of the race course.
On or after the 13th of October we have a chance to pre-run the course. It's the time we have to go down to Mexico and drive the entire 1296 mile course to make notes and make sure the car can withstand the beating.
