03/The Next Day/07 Northern Columbia
As I boarded the bus, I was blown
kisses by one of the local girls. We traveled along the north coast of
Columbia for many hours before we finally arrived at Parque de Tyrona
around dusk.
We donned our backpacks and headed in to the forest which is more like
a jungle. It was a 3.6 kilometer hike down the well beaten trail that
was a little difficult to navigate in the dark. I hiked ahead until I
was well out of sight by the rest of the group. I hiked up the
embankment and hid in the dark jungle, waiting for the rest of the
group.
As they walked by, not knowing I was there, I violently shook a branch
and let out my best monkey scream. The girls were scared out of their
skin. Some ran, some froze and others hid behind their friends. When
they finally realized it was me and not some crazed, rabid monkey,
their screams turned to laughter. Thankfully, no one was angry with me.
We arrived at the small community of travelers and vacationers near the
beach singing Old MacDonald. Pat had forgotten something at the bus so
we walked all the way back. On the way we saw many interesting insects
including a large spider as big as my hand. Some of the bugs were like
the fireflies we have here in the States but different. Some glow green
and some glow red. One had glowing eyes that looked like he had his
high beams on. When we arrived back at the campers community, dinner
was
waiting for us. It was a large red snapper staring at me. It was so
good. Later several of us took a moonlit walk down the beach. Bobby
found a couple of new friends at the end of the beach. Bobby is
searching for something but looking in the wrong places.
