Today we visited our new friends' families. When I say we, I am referring to two car loads of us; Juan, his wife Beatrice and two teenage daughters, Denny, his wife Marno and their 22 year old boy, Bobby, Pat and I.
Get this..... Denny and Marno had a business in South Florida called Plan-B. You all don't know what Plan-B means to Patrick and I yet but I promise you, one day I will explain it.
On the way we stopped at the Sugar Cane Museum of Columbia. It was a very well maintained place with the history of sugar cane in Columbia. As in the United States, African slaves were a big part of the agriculture industry in Columbia.
Back to our visits..... We first visited Juan's Mother and Father on their ranch about an hour from the city. They built their home in the early seventies. It's a circular shaped home that somewhat resembles a sea shell. For the most part, it is open air as many of the homes here in Columbia are. The weather in Columbia is so nice, people live their lives outside more than inside. Many entrances to homes are doorless and many windows lack glass. Instead, homes or properties are surrounded by secure fences and large gates.
Our next stop was at the weekend home of Beatrice's Aunts, about a half hour further away from the city. This casa was like a museum. Everything except the bathrooms was exactly as it was back in the fifties. The garden was incredible. There are more than 17 different fruit trees there including Guanabana which is a football sized spiny green fruit that grows in tall trees. It's very much like the Durian fruit of Thailand, only better. We were fed a feast. Most of it was vegetarian including two different salads, a mango salad and an avocado salad. there were a couple different meat dishes as well but I don't know what they were. Both families welcomes us with open arms.
This country has so many different fruits. Every morning we are served fresh squeezed orange juice and fresh cut fruits as well as eggs, cheese and rolls or pastries.
Tonight I go to sleep with a full belly.
